Ways To Fix a Broken Car Fob Key

Ways To Fix a Broken Car Fob Key

Are you unable to use your car key Fob because the keyring loop has broken? Or is the key fob malfunctioning because of wear and tear? Sometimes, the plastic housing the fob drops and gets broken which makes the vehicle inaccessible.

If fob-related issues are not resolved, there might be a breach in the security of the car, and in most cases, the ignition will not start. All hope is not lost when the key fob is malfunctioning or broken because it could be reprogramed by a professional from Locksmith Management or a technically savvy car owner.

However, if the fob is merely malfunctioning due to signal loss, you can resolve the problem by carrying out the following steps:

Step 1

Replace the batteries in the key fobs if it's been a while. Get inside the car (driver's seat) and ensure that all doors are closed. Then insert the key into the ignition hole and switch it on so as to power the electrical systems. However, do not start the engine.

Step 2

While the key is in "On" position, press the fob's lock button and put the key back in "Off" position. This should be repeated at least thrice before returning the key back to "On' position. Doing this would send a signal to the ECU (electronic control unit) of the car. After carrying out the above process, expect to hear a lock sound. This indicates that you have reached the programming mode. To complete the programming, press the lock button once more in the space of five seconds. Then come out of the car to test the key.

If the above is not the case and the key fob gets broken, these are the ways to fix it:

Check the Vehicle's Warranty and Insurance

Some cars' warranties and insurance policies might provide coverage for lost or damaged keys. Thus, the car dealership or insurance firm will bear the cost of replacing the key. If this isn't possible, then you would have to pay for a new key, which can be expensive. But if you want to cut down costs then you should contact the service of a reliable automotive locksmith

Know the Car Make, Model, and Year
It is compulsory to check the vehicle's make, model, and year of manufacture to resolve key fob issues. This is because the keys of some high-end or new models of cars cannot be reprogramed except by the manufacturer or car dealership.

Purchase a Key Fob

An aftermarket fob will be best for this job because it costs less and can easily be programmed. These fobs can be purchased from e-commerce sites like Amazon, KeylessOption.com, and Walmart.com. Some experienced locksmiths usually have these fobs in stock and sell them to clients.

Synchronize the Buttons

This is a very important step in the whole repair process. After fixing the key fob, you should plug in the remote and synchronize the buttons so that the buttons will work effectively with the car.
